5 Motivating Technology TED Talks to Listen To

Speaker in front of room

There’s no better place to find inspiration than in a TED Talk. Speakers at these conferences are accomplished, super-knowledgeable, and genuinely inspiring, no matter what industry they’re in. Listen to a TED Talk, and you’ll usually walk away with more information than you know what to do with and the motivation to achieve great things. And if you’re in the tech industry, you’re capable of great ideas! So, check out these five technology TED Talks that will motivate you to tackle new challenges and overcome every obstacle.

Our Next Giant Leap

Peter Diamandis runs the X Prize Foundation, an organization committed to inventions that address issues such as space flight, mobile medical diagnostics, and oil spill cleanup. He aims to incentivize these inventors with cash prizes, insisting that it’s our moral imperative to keep exploring space.

Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders

This TED Talk, given by none other than Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, examines why a significantly smaller percentage of women than men advance to the top of their careers. It’s possible, so what are the obstacles that prevent it? She offers three pieces of advice for women, telling them to “lean in” to their careers instead of stepping back like so many do when they start their families.

The Paralyzed Rat That Walked

Paralysis is a pretty devastating diagnosis. Fortunately, esteemed researchers like Gregoire Courtine have designated their careers to imagine new ways to recover after spinal cord injuries. In this talk, he talks about his latest method—a combination of drugs, electrical stimulation, and a robot—which can reawaken neural pathways and help the body relearn how to move on its own. Courtine teaches more about it in this TED Talk and how he helped a paralyzed rat learn to run and take the steps.

Life at 30,000 Feet

In this thirty-minute TED Talk, Richard Branson, head of the Virgin empire, sits in an interview with Chris Anderson and talks about the ups and downs of his career. He tells of his many near-death experiences and what inspires him to keep work and to take risks.

The Unexpected Benefit of Celebrating Failure

Astro Teller oversees X, serves on the board on several businesses, and has authored three books. In his TED Talk, he discusses his Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory, a group of investors and entrepreneurs who launch the latest technologies to improve the world. At Moonshot, bold, audacious, and even magical ideas are encouraged because they can solve problems for millions of people. He talks about how he gets his employees to take risks and follow their vision.
