Job Title: Principal Cost Estimator, Power Generation
Location: Waltham or Albany – Hybrid – Once a week onsite.
Job Summary: We are partnering with a leading energy infrastructure organization to find a highly skilled estimator who can bring precision, insight, and commercial discipline to complex electric transmission and generation work. Our team is seeking a detail-driven professional who can build competitive, data-backed cost estimates that support major project planning, execution, and solicitation success.
Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed cost estimates for multiple concurrent electric transmission and generation projects, including new construction, upgrades, and maintenance of power stations, transmission lines, substations, and converter stations.
- Lead cost estimation efforts for competitive transmission and generation solicitations, ensuring estimates are accurate, competitive, and compliant with requirements.
- Analyze project specifications, drawings, site information, and supporting documentation to produce reliable cost assessments and risk-aware recommendations.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, procurement, supply chain, financial modeling, vendors, and other stakeholders to align scope, manage uncertainty, and support informed decision-making.
Required Skills:
- 3+ years of cost estimating experience on complex construction/capital projects; mid-level candidates are acceptable.
- Strong experience estimating large energy infrastructure projects, especially power generation; electric transmission is a very close second.
- Experience preparing detailed construction cost estimates covering labor, materials, equipment, permitting, environmental, and other project costs.
- Ability to review engineering drawings, designs, specifications, and project documentation to develop estimates.
- Understanding of utility/energy construction processes and large capital projects.
- Experience with cost risk, contingency, and cost control for capital projects.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and experience with cost estimating systems/software.
- Experience performing estimate vs. actual cost analysis, reporting, and updating estimates.
- Ability to collaborate with engineering, project management, procurement/supply chain, vendors, and finance teams.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
Preferred Skills:
- Direct cost estimating experience with electric transmission and/or power generation projects.
- Experience estimating transmission lines, substations, power stations, or converter stations.
- HVDC project experience.
- 345kV–765kV HVAC transmission project experience.
- Experience with HeavyBid or similar estimating software.
- Experience with SAP, Oracle, and/or AutoCAD.
- Monte Carlo, PERT, Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), or similar cost sensitivity/risk analysis experience.
- Experience working for an Engineering/Construction/EPC firm, particularly developing estimates for bids, proposals, or competitive solicitations.
- Knowledge of electric transmission regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- CCP or PMP certification is a plus.
- Master's degree is a plus.
