5 Things You Should Never Say to an Interviewer

The interview is arguably the most crucial stage of the job-seeking process. As candidates, the interview is our opportunity to show a potential employer what sets us apart from the competition. As such, it should be our top priority to go into every interview feeling as prepared and confident as possible. And to feel optimally prepared, you must have a clear sense of what to say (and also what not to say) during an interview.

Of course, the flow of conversation in any interview will vary depending on the position that’s being applied for. Still, there are some general communication do’s and don’ts that should be adhered to in any IT interview.

Here are some things to never say in an interview, plus some alternative approaches to apply instead:

● Don’t ask how much the job pays, particularly if it’s your first interview with an employer. Instead, wait until your interviewer brings up the subject of salary before you broach the subject.

● Don’t say that you don’t have any weak spots in your resume or professional background. When an employer asks about any personal weaknesses, they’re typically looking for someone who can think and speak with objectivity and humility.

● Don’t say anything to denigrate a former employer. If you’re asked about your feelings toward a former boss, stick to the strictly professional details.

● Don’t comment on your interviewer’s wardrobe or physical appearance.

● Don’t say that you don’t have any questions at the end of an interview. In all likelihood, this will be interpreted as laziness or a lack of interest in the role. Instead, you should always plan on asking a few questions at the end of your interview to demonstrate that you’ve done your homework.
