What Tech Jobs Will Be Growing in 2018

It’s no secret that the job market for tech professionals is booming and has been for years. While that trend looks to continue in 2018, some professions will be in more demand than others.

As technology evolves, so do the needs of employers looking to leverage technology in their operations. Many experts are forecasting that next year’s hottest tech jobs will be for data scientist, business intelligence analyst, database developer, network administrator and data security administrator.

Below is a more in-depth look at these positions.

Data Scientist

A data scientist collects, processes and evaluates data to gain insight or reach conclusions. They should also be able to clearly communicate findings and provide suggestions to others in the organization, some of whom may not be well-versed in IT.

In 2016, the employment website Glassdoor ranked data scientist as No. 1 in its best job in America list. The site listed more than 1,700 open data scientist positions and pegged the median annual salary at nearly $120,000.

Business intelligence analyst

Business intelligence analysts have IT abilities that allow them to understand a business’ information needs and then communicate how to address those needs to stakeholders. This job is becoming increasingly important as companies pivot to data analytics as a part of their overall strategy.

Someone pursuing a job as a business intelligence analyst should have experience with database, analytics and reporting tools. Employers normally seem for applicants with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or software engineering.

Database developer

A database developer straddles the line between a programmer and a database administrator. Their expertise is in working with databases, but database developers concentrate on programming for the database, not setting up and maintaining it like a database administrator.

A database developer must be familiar with languages like Java or C# in order to coordinate effectively with other developers. These abilities also will permit you to be involved in work on the backend of systems that talk to the database.

Network administrator

Network administrators are accountable for managing LAN/WAN protocol, software and hardware. They invest a great deal of time troubleshooting and normally have to be on-call in the event of an emergency or malfunction. The essential qualifications for this position depend on how extensive an employer’s needs are, and there are also a number of soft skills that are required for most network administrator positions, including troubleshooting abilities, diagnostic skills, good communication and critical thinking abilities.

Data security administrator

Dealing with copious amounts of data requires robust cyber security, which protects the company, staff members, clients and customers. Data security professionals are accountable for determining network security needs, making certain all security measures are current, tracking company-wide security habits and putting security strategies into action.

People looking to get into data security should have strong programming, math, and problem-solving skills.
