Here is Why Remote Work Is so Important to IT Employees

Companies are increasingly embracing virtual teams, geographically dispersed workers who use online communication to collaborate.

Remote working is increasing across all industries, not just the tech industry. A recent government report said 47 percent of U.S. workers could do their job remotely and developing technology will likely increase this number.

Remote work is also a very attractive arrangement for workers because it translates to a number of benefits for them through increased flexibility. Consider the following reasons why remote work is so appealing for IT workers.

Work-life balance

From continuing education to childcare responsibilities, most IT professionals have a lot to take care of outside the workplace. A remote working arrangement can allow them to schedule classes or doctor’s appointments during the day and work in the evening, leading to a better work-life balance.

Less stress

Anyone who has ever worked in an office environment knows it can be stressful: You have to navigate different personalities, manage office politics and be on your best behavior whenever your supervisor is around.

When you are working remotely, a lot of your communication is done through collaboration programs and email. The distance allows you to embrace your own style, however unorthodox is might be, and the time delay associated with email gives you a chance to thoughtfully respond to various problems, both of which lead to lower stress.

A higher level of engagement

When workers are given the opportunity to choose when they take care of their job responsibilities, they are going to do work when it best suits their schedule. This means remote workers can do their jobs when there are feeling the most engaged and inspired. For instance, some people may find they do their best work from 9 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Choice of venue

Let’s face it: The best office environment is no match for the local park or your favorite coffee shop. Remote working arrangements give IT workers the chance to pick where they work throughout the day, on any given day.

Some remote workers choose to do their job at a co-working space of their choosing, which can provide the added benefits of networking and collaboration.

No commute

How many hours a week do you spend getting to or coming from work? Those hours are essentially ‘lost time’ – especially if you are behind the wheel of a vehicle. Also, research shows that people who commute report lower levels of life satisfaction than those who do not.

In addition to being good for individuals, eliminating a commute is also good for the environment.

Cheaper

Not commuting, making lunch at home and needing less office attire all mean lower costs for remote workers, who can make lunch at home and work in their pajamas.
